When Rafael van der Vaart signed for Tottenham on transfer deadline day there was one man he might not have been looking forward to coming up against in the Premier League. Howard Webb was in charge of the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa and in the heated game the Dutch were unhappy with the English referee’s performance, although The Netherlands can count themselves lucky that Nigel de Jong wasn’t sent off – incidentally the player that van der Vaart came on for. Webb was officiating in his first Premier League match since the World Cup at The Hawthorns as Spurs drew with West Brom and largely kept his cards in his pocket on this occasion. Here are Webb and van der Vaart shaking hands at the start of the game, but what pleasantries are they sharing?

This week you can win a copy of Superfan!
Superfan’ Morris Keston has organised over 25 testimonial matches and other fund-raising dinners and events for footballing legends over the years, including ones for Geoff Hurst, Gordon Banks and the late Bobby Moore.
He says: “Before top players could demand £100,000 a week, the stars of yesteryear would usually hit the panic button when their playing days looked numbered. A testimonial was an opportunity to finally get a decent payday and I was only too happy to help my friends in football earn a few quid out of them. Indeed, it was a privilege.”
