Former AC Milan Chief Football Officer Zvonimir Boban claims that the Italian giants nearly signed the midfielder for €20 million (£16.8m) back when he was at Red Bull Salzburg. In the end, the Hungary international left for RB Leipzig in 2021 and then Liverpool two years later. And like that, the rest is history.

“We could have also have taken Szoboszlai, everything was agreed: €20m of the clause with Salzburg,” he told Calciomercato.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Boban may quite rightly feel aggrieved as two years after Szoboszlai left Salzburg for Leipzig, Liverpool signed him in a £60m ($79m) deal. That could have been valuable funds for Milan – who are in a division that is dwarfed financially by the Premier League.
