Sunderland youngster Jack Diamond may well still be developing and improving, but his impressive cameo performance in the 3-1 Checkatrade Trophy win against Carlisle United at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night suggests he is giving manager Jack Ross another selection headache.
What’s the word, then?
Well, according to The Chronicle the Scottish boss has been really impressed with what he has seen from the 18-year-old for the youth sides this season, and he brought him into the first-team squad for the match against Carlisle on Wednesday.
While he didn’t start the fixture, he did come off of the substitutes’ bench and nearly got himself a goal, with Ross full of praise for the talented teenager afterwards.
The 42-year-old said, via The Chronicle: “Jack Diamond is a good player, he showed that in his time on the pitch. He has a really good ability to take the ball on the half-turn and go forward, he drifts past people so easily.
“There’s loads of things for him to improve on. We’ve actually been feeding information to him and in the recent U23’s games he’s taken that on board, which is really good.”

What do Ross’ comments mean for Diamond?
They are really positive.
The fact that the former St Mirren chief has not only highlighted him for his performance against the Cumbrian outfit, but also praised him for taking on board the tips he has been given, means he is surely in the reckoning for a spot in the first-team squad in League One now.
Of course, being a striker and with the Wearside outfit not having loads of options there right now in the absence of the injured Charlie Wyke, Diamond really has an opportunity to get some league minutes under his belt if he continues to impress his manager.
